Google’s Aug. 1 core algorithm update: Who did it impact, and how much?

A week after the big Google algorithm update, nicknamed the Medic Update, here is everything we know about it, including official information from Google and non-official insights from across the industry.

The Google search algorithm update from August 1 is now fully rolled out, and here is what we know about the update, who we think was impacted and some of the analysis of what, if any, actions you may want to consider taking if you were negatively impacted.

In summary, Google is calling this a broad, global, core update, but based on much of the analysis done thus far, there seems to be a focus on health and medical sites and YMYL Your Money Your Life sites. But many sites besides those were impacted by the update. Google is telling us that there is nothing you can do to fix your site, so you should just focus on making a great experience, offer better content and a more useful website. This update has taken on the name the Medic Update because of its focus on the medical and health space. This specific focus is something Google will not confirm.

What we know from Google

Google has said that this update was a “broad core algorithm update” and that it does these updates “several times per year.”

Google New Audio Content Searchable Update for SEO

Google Wants to Make Audio Content Searchable

Google New Audio Content Searchable Update for SEO

Google wants to change how people discover audio content in search results.

In a recent interview, Zach Reneau-Wedeen of Google’s podcast team details the company’s plans to prioritize audio in the same way it does text, images, and video.

”Right now Google is really good at giving you text and video related to your search query. With all the amazing work podcasters are publishing each day, there’s no good reason why audio isn’t a first-class citizen in the same way.”

One of the ways Google plans to make audio content more searchable is to incorporate podcast metadata into search results.

That means, in addition to podcasts showing up when the title is searched for, podcasts could also be returned in search results when topics and/or people are searched for.

This would involve Google creating a way to learn what each podcast is about, and understanding the content of specific episodes.

”This is something Google has done extremely well for text articles, as well as for images and even more structured data such as maps. We can help with audio, too. It has the potential to help people find the best content for them in that moment, better than they can today.”

In a future where audio content is indexed like text it could open up an entirely new category for marketers— audio SEO.

If audio SEO became a thing it could give way to new forms of audio content altogether, such as spoken-word versions of articles, or short sound clips answering specific questions.

Let’s just hope it doesn’t lead to podcasters repeating words over and over again in attempt to rank for certain keywords.

Google Released New Algorithm Update on March 23rd 2018 : Chatter & Signals

On March 23, 2018 Google Released  New Algorithm Update : Chatter & Signals

Google Algorithm Update March 23rd 2018

There seemed to be some chatter around the algorithm update starting back up again after a number of days of calm. Well, the weekend got pretty heated with chatter within the community, although not all of the automated tracking tools picked up on the changes. Some are saying the update started as early as the 21st/22nd but most are thinking the 23rd.

Some are saying this update was a tweak to the core update from earlier this month. Some think this is a new thing - of course, we do not know what it is unless Google tells us.

The ongoing WebmasterWorld thread has chatter since Friday afternoon throughout the weekend. Here is some of it:

Anybody else has lost traffic today March 23, 2018 ?
Yes, multiple sites. Starting 6PM ET on 3/21. -30-60% range.
~10% drop in traffic on 3 different sites on 3/23.
Starting 8 AM EST 3/22 on the biggest site
Seeing a further 20% drop here...
Seems Google want large, corporate and less relevant sites such as quora, reddit, pinterest, amazon etc to dominate all the niche serps...

Latest Google Ranking Update | New Google Algorithm Update | SEO Open Book

This weekend and today I feel a shuffle of Google results with a lot of spam into the light. New Google Algorithm Update
Recently, i have seen some fluctuation on ranking. it's Google Algorithm Update. I received a few emails yesterday, saw some comments on this site and on WebmasterWorld and the tools are still pretty high in tracking volatility - there may be a Google search algorithm update brewing right now. It is way early, the SEO chatter at these levels do not convince me fully that there is an update versus a blip for a couple of hours in the search results. Here are the very few comments that people sent me or posted in the forums around a possible Google update starting sometime yesterday:

I'm convinced on June 25 a massive algo update happened. I've seen major shifts on 3 different websites. Terms that were once getting them top listed no longer do.
What's more, older articles from the web seem to be outranking newer, more substantive content.
I did a random check on several websites and talked to two webmasters. They've observed the same thing.
Something is absolutely going on.
This weekend and today I feel a shuffle of Google results with a lot of spam into the light.
1,2,3 position = fixed brand positions, after that a lot of garbage.
Many of my product pages seem to be sandboxed. I cannot find them anywhere!

Shake SEO World - Google’s Fred and Owl Updates

2 Major Google Algorithm Updates Shaking the SEO World

Fred Google Update

March 8th – Unconfirmed “Fred Update” shakes the SEO world in the words of Barry Schwartz from SEO Roundtable.

Whilst Google rolls out an estimated 600 updates annually, the Fred Update (a name which was jokingly suggested by Google’s Gary Illyes and seemingly adopted by the SEO community) is reportedly targeted towards spam links. The chatter and reports are Black Hat SEO communities certainly support this theory with similar sites taking big hits in organic rankings.

Black hat SEO refers to aggressive technics designed to manipulate (or trick) search engines using tactics such as link manipulation, invisible text, sneaky redirects, link farms and article spinning. We’ve covered the difference between black hat seo and white hat seo in our previous post.

Here are five things you can do right now to see if you were affected and start recovering any lost rankings and traffic

  1. Study your Google Analytics data. Did you see a drop in organic traffic or the number of keywords you were ranking for between 5th and 20th March? If no, you are probably OK.
  2. Segment your content into two categories – high quality and updated vs low quality and stale.
  3. Cross-reference your lost keywords, based on organic traffic volume and previous Google rankings, with any low-quality content pages.
  4. Get working on improving your content quality immediately. Start by editing and improving existing content and adding updates. Being with cornerstone pages that were driving the most traffic pre-Fred (see number 3).
  5. Use a backlink spam audit tool to search and remove any questionable backlinks. Also, ensure that your remaining “good” backlinks appear organic and natural and in reasonable ratios. For example, follow to no follow ratios, similarities in anchor text, etc. are all factors that Google takes into account when attributing the value of your backlinks.

Owl Google Update

Google announced on 25th April major changes meant to fight fake news and hate speech that detrimentally impact search results.

The Google algorithm update, codenamed “Project Owl,” allows consumers two new ways to report what they perceive as problems (or concerns) in organic search results. It is perhaps the biggest step of recent to integrate big data, machine learning and direct human (or end user) feedback.

Why is Google making changes?

Google has come under under fire for some time for search results that show false, offensive, or outrageous information about certain topics. For instance, search results prominently displayed links to pro-Nazi sites in response to queries about the Holocaust. Additionally, when people started typing phrases about women or racial groups, Google would suggest queries like “Why are women so dumb?”

Needless to say this got a lot of negative press and complaints from activists such as women’s rights movements. The algorithm change is no real departure from the original intent, which is to display quality (and factual) information.

Here is a snapshot of the policy violation report resulting from the Owl Update.

How the Owl Update favours smaller businesses.

The update, which will be gradually rolled out over the span of a few months, also aims to give more to weight to “authoritative content” over “authoritative sites”. This allows an excellent opportunity for smaller (and newer) businesses to produce quality content to dominate over larger businesses who previously would have ranked due to factors such as domain authority.

How can you benefit from the Owl Update – start focussing on producing high quality, original and engaging content on regular basis within your niche.

Blogging and content creation (such as this) form a critical part of white hat SEO strategy which we at the Digital Squad engage in. Despite being the subject matter experts, business owners often admit not having the time to write content. To address this common problem, we work with a team of 20 content writers, authors and blogger who are specialists in multiple niches. Using specialist content writers, we constantly deliver high quality, engaging pieces of work, which are loved by both end-user and Google.

If your business has taken a hit in the past 2 months due to either the Fred or more recent Owl update, talk to NZ’s leading SEO agency today.

We provide a complementary site audit (all manually done in house, usually takes us 2 days) and a full SEO campaign proposal which is specifically engineered to your domain, industry /niche and takes into your competitors strategy (yes, we’re extremely good at reverse engineering it!).

Google: Hummingbird | SEO Hummingbird Update | Hummingbird Update

What Is Google Hummingbird Update in SEO?
“Hummingbird” is the name of the new search platform that Google is using as of September 2013, the name comes from being “precise and fast” and is designed to better focus on the meaning behind the words. Read our Google Hummingbird FAQ here.

Hummingbird is paying more attention to each word in a query, ensuring that the whole query — the whole sentence or conversation or meaning — is taken into account, rather than particular words. The goal is that pages matching the meaning do better, rather than pages matching just a few words.

Google Hummingbird is designed to apply the meaning technology to billions of pages from across the web, in addition to Knowledge Graph facts, which may bring back better results.
